Trazodone is an antidepressant medication that’s FDA-approved to treat depression in adults. However, your healthcare professional might prescribe the medication off-label for other conditions, such as fibromyalgia, Alzheimer’s disease, or substance use disorder. It’s most often prescribed off-label to treat insomnia.

Trazodone, which is usually prescribed as a short-term treatment for insomnia, is available as a tablet that you can take by mouth. The brand-name equivalent, Desyrel, has been discontinued in the U.S., so you can only purchase trazodone as a generic medication.

The price of trazodone can vary depending on the pharmacy you choose, your prescribed dosage, and other factors. But there are ways to save money on trazodone, such as comparing pharmacy prices and using a GoodRx coupon.

How much does trazodone cost?

Without insurance, trazodone can cost around $14.83 for 30 tablets of 50 mg at some pharmacies. If you need a higher dosage and more tablets, you can expect to pay more. For example, trazodone can cost around $44.34 for 60 tablets of 150 mg.

What factors affect the cost of trazodone?

The actual price you will pay for trazodone will depend on the following factors:

  • Geographic location: The price you pay for trazodone may vary depending on where you live. According to GoodRx research, you may pay less for prescription medications in major U.S. cities, such as Houston and Atlanta. However, residents in some cities, such as New York, pay more than the national average.

  • Pharmacy: Prescription medication prices can also vary between pharmacies, even on the same block, due to differences in pharmacy contracts.

  • Insurance: If your insurance plan covers trazodone, it may cover the majority of the cost. However, you may still have to pay deductibles, coinsurance, and/or copays.

  • Dosage: The dosage prescribed by your healthcare professional will depend on how well you can tolerate trazodone and the reason you are taking it, which can also affect the cost. Trazodone is available in dosages of 50 mg, 100 mg, 150 mg, and 300 mg.

Does insurance cover trazodone?

Many health insurance plans typically cover medications, including trazodone, that are used to treat depression and other mental health conditions. However, coverage depends on your specific plan. If your insurance does not cover trazodone, you can request a formulary exception or talk to your healthcare professional about alternatives.

All Medicare Part D prescription medication plans are required to cover most antidepressants, as they fall within a protected class. However, different plans can choose which specific medications they cover, and they may update their formulary lists during the year.

Medicaid programs typically cover trazodone, but coverage will depend on your state’s specific program. For example, trazodone is listed as a preferred agent under the Arizona and Texas state Medicaid programs.

Ways to save on trazodone

Below are five ways to save on trazodone.

1. Download a GoodRx coupon

Whether you have insurance or not, you can use a GoodRx coupon to help you save money on trazodone. With a GoodRx coupon, you may be able to pay as little as $4.20 for 30 tablets of 50 mg. For the same quantity of 300 mg tablets, you can pay as low as $29.57.

To download your free GoodRx coupon:

  • Visit www.goodrx.com or download the GoodRx app.

  • Type “trazodone” in the search box and input your prescribed dosage information.

  • Choose your pharmacy. You can print, text, or email your coupon.

  • Present the coupon at the pharmacy, ideally before your pharmacy starts the filling process. You can present a coupon at pickup instead, but this can lead to minor delays since your prescription will need to be readjudicated.

  • Can you use trazodone for sleep? Although trazodone is FDA-approved for depression, here’s what you should know about taking it off-label for insomnia.

  • Here’s what to know about trazodone side effects. The most common trazodone side effects include drowsiness and dry mouth, but there are also sexual side effects you should know about.

  • Save money with a health savings account (HSA). Use your HSA to pay for prescription medications including trazodone.

2. Request a larger supply

If you take trazodone regularly, consider asking your healthcare professional to prescribe a 90-day supply instead of a 30-day supply. A larger medication supply often ends up costing less per tablet, and you’ll be able to save time by making fewer trips to the pharmacy.

3. Visit GoodRx to compare prices

In addition to helping you find coupons, GoodRx can help you compare the cost of trazodone at different pharmacies in your area. Use the website or app to review prices at different pharmacies.

4. Use your remaining FSA dollars

Flexible spending accounts (FSAs) allow you to set aside pretax dollars from your paycheck to pay for qualified medical expenses, such as prescription medications. You can review your plan documents or contact your FSA administrator to confirm that trazodone is eligible. Since your FSA funds expire at the end of the plan year, take stock of your medication needs now so your funds won’t go to waste. Keep your receipts so that you can receive reimbursement for your expenses.

5. Purchase your medication with your HSA

If you have a health savings account (HSA), you can use those funds to pay for trazodone. Unlike with an FSA, the money in your HSA doesn’t expire. Your remaining HSA dollars roll over every year, and you can invest them to potentially grow your balance. You can use the money in your account any time you want to pay for qualified medical expenses, such as trazodone, both now and during retirement.

The bottom line

Without insurance, 30 trazodone tablets of 50 mg cost around $14.83. The price you will pay will depend on your pharmacy, prescribed dosage, and other factors. To lower the cost of trazodone, consider getting a 90-day supply or using a GoodRx coupon. You can also use your HSA or FSA funds and compare prices at different pharmacies in your area to lower your out-of-pocket costs.
