Compare Lexapro vs. Zoloft

Lexapro (escitalopram) and sertraline (Zoloft) are both selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) used to treat depression and anxiety-related conditions, but they have some differences. Lexapro is typically taken once daily, and it can be used in children as young as 12 for depression. Zoloft is also taken once daily and can be used in children as young as 6 for OCD. Common side effects for Lexapro include nausea, trouble sleeping, and drowsiness, whereas Zoloft is more likely to cause nausea, diarrhea, and dry mouth. Both medications can cause withdrawal symptoms if stopped abruptly and have risks of serious side effects like serotonin syndrome and suicidal thoughts. However, Zoloft is less likely to cause weight gain compared to other SSRIs, and its liquid form contains alcohol, which requires careful handling.
