Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
What causes high blood pressure?

Research shows that certain characteristics, or risk factors, can increase your chances of developing hypertension. The American Heart Association identifies the following issues as causes of hypertension: genetics, being overweight or obese, eating too much sodium, eating too little potassium, an inactive lifestyle, excessive alcohol consumption, medication side effects, kidney problems, obstructive sleep apnea, and hormone imbalances.

What is a normal blood pressure?

The current definitions for “normal” and “high” blood pressure are divided into three levels:

  1. Normal blood pressure (considered healthy): Top number less than 120 mmHg and bottom number less than 80 mmHg

  2. Elevated blood pressure (needs close monitoring): Top number 120 mmHg to 129 mmHg and bottom number less than 80 mmHg

  3. Hypertension or high blood pressure (needs treatment): Top number above 130 mmHg or bottom number above 80 mmHg

What is a MinuteClinic® at CVS® and how can I get an in-person checkup?

MinuteClinic is a walk-in medical clinic inside select CVS pharmacies and Target stores. You can schedule an appointment at a MinuteClinic, where you’ll be seen by a certified family nurse practitioner or physician assistant in person.

What medication plan might the nurse practitioner prescribe for me?

Sometimes, two or more medications are needed to lower the blood pressure to safe levels. There are four classes of blood pressure medications that are considered “first line,” or the most effective medicines used to lower blood pressure, so it’s likely you’ll be prescribed at least one of those. You should plan to work closely with your healthcare provider to find the right treatment plan for you.

Do these medicines have side effects?

Yes, these medicines do have the risk of potentially serious side effects. The provider will review these risks with you and answer any questions or concerns you have.
