What is HPV?

The human papilloma virus (HPV) causes genital warts which are growths on the skin in the genital area. The warts can be also be found on the lips, mouth, and throat. Symptoms that may occur include genital itching, vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding, and dampness in areas where warts are present.

Treatments for HPV include skin treatments, medication, and surgical removal of warts. Common drug classes used to treat HPV are acetic acids, immune response modifiers, interferon alphas, and podophyllotoxins. Vaccinations can be used for prevention.
