Aralast NP is part of the Human Alpha-1 Proteinase Inhibitors class and treats Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. Human alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor (also known as alpha-1 antitrypsin) is a protein normally present in the body that helps prevent breakdown of tissues in the lungs. A deficiency of alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor can lead to emphysema. This deficiency is a genetic disorder and can't be cured, but replacement of the protein can maintain and treat symptoms.
