What is Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is a disease of the colon (large intestine) which causes sores and ulcers. Symptoms include abdominal pain, bloody stools, fever, rectal pain, and weight loss. There is no known cause of ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease.

Treatment for ulcerative colitis includes a change in diet, managing stress, surgery, and medications. Common drug classes used to treat ulcerative colitis are aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, and TNF blockers.
