Propecia (finasteride)

5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors

Propecia (finasteride) is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor used to treat male pattern hair loss. It prevents conversion of testosterone to the more potent male hormone dihydrotestosterone in the scalp. The reduced hormone activity can allow slowed hair loss or regrowth of hair. Propecia is also available as generic finasteride. Another brand, Proscar is also available as generic finasteride, but the higher strength is prescribed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) instead.
