Generic Rilutek Is Now Available

by Elizabeth Davis on July 1, 2013 at 10:19 am

Good news for anyone taking Rilutek for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease): generic Rilutek is now available as riluzole.

While there is no cure for ALS, Rilutek is the only drug approved by the FDA to slow the progression of the disease, rather than just treating individual symptoms, so the generic alternative may be helpful for both insured and uninsured patients.

Generic riluzole is already available for less than half the cost of the brand at some pharmacies, and there are several manufacturers approved to make generic versions, so that will hopefully help lower prices further over time. The generic may also be covered more favorably (in a lower tier with a lower co-pay) by some insurance plans.

You can compare Rilutek and riluzole cash and coupon prices in your area here.
